Closeup on the Forges de Pyrène

The Forges de Pyrène are a cultural project which has been set up in a former forge dating back to the 15th century. A team of enthusiasts reclaimed the premises so as to recreate a village from days gone by, when everything was done without electricity. The purpose of this initiative was to preserve the craftsmanship of the 19th and 20th centuries, so that this unique know-how prospered. You will (re) discover the skills of the blacksmith, the master glass-maker, the gold panner, the baker, the basket maker and the clog maker; professions which, at the time, had to be carried out without assistance and above all which had to be adapted to nature's rhythm. As well as workshops, you'll be able to visit a museum too, which is home to more than 5,000 items from down through the years, deriving from 130 different occupations.

The village is open from the middle of April, 10am to 6pm, and lies just 5km from Foix. This means you can come here as well as see the castle in the town. If you're on holiday with the family, and with your pets too, please bear in mind that pets are not permitted on the estate. However, there is a shady kennel available just beside it that's free of charge. Finally, there's a picnic area for you to enjoy lunch, should you wish to do so.
